They also won’t be able to “compare” their sexual experiences with a version of themselves from an alternate universe in which their genitals had been left intact when they were children: this point will become important later on. So if a girl has her labia removed (which is a federal crime in most Western countries), or if a boy has his foreskin removed, neither one will be able to experience any of the subjective sensations that go along with those specific activities when they grow up and become sexually active. And just like the foreskin, they are richly supplied with nerve endings, blood vessels, and sebaceous glands that provide natural lubrication during sexual activity.ĭepending on one’s sexual preferences, the labia can be tugged, stretched, sucked on, and otherwise “played with” as a part of one’s sexual experience the same thing is true of the foreskin. “The labia are part of the vulva!” Quite right. “That doesn’t make any sense,” you might say. Imagine a study that claimed to show that removing a girl’s labia minora-her vaginal “lips”-did not reduce the sensitivity of the vulva. Specifically, it loses all of the sensitivity experienced in the foreskin itself, along with all subjective sensations that are unique to having a foreskin.Ĭhief among these sensations is the feeling of rolling the foreskin back and forth over the head of the penis-the “glans”-during sex, foreplay, or masturbation (see this NSFW video to get the idea): that specific feeling does not exist without a foreskin. It is made up of sensitive tissue (more on this below) so if you remove it, the penis loses sensitivity by definition. Further, the levels of guilt in the two cases above will be high and low, respectively. According to Freud, a strong super-ego serves to inhibit the biological instincts of the id, while a weak super-ego gives in to the id's urgings. Both parts of the super-ego develop through experience with others or via social interactions. Comparisons are made between the ego-ideal and one's actual behavior. The ego-ideal is an idealized view of one's self. The conscience decides what course of action one should take. The conscience is the familiar metaphor of angel and devil on each shoulder. The superego consists of two parts, the conscience and the ego-ideal. For example: having extra-marital affairs". "The Super-ego can be thought of as a type of conscience that punishes misbehavior with feelings of guilt. It comprises that part of the personality, mainly unconscious, which includes the individual's ego ideals, spiritual goals, and the psychic agency (commonly called "conscience") that criticises and prohibits his or her drives, fantasies, feelings, and actions. The Super-ego aims for perfection and the ideal outcome. bringing about harmony among the forces and influences working in and upon it, and readily 'breaks out in anxiety". "Thus the ego, driven by the id, confined by the super-ego, repulsed by reality, struggles. 110 Its task is to find a balance between primitive drives and reality while satisfying the id and super-ego. 363/4īut the ego "serves three severe masters.the external world, the super-ego and the id". in its relation to the id it is like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse with this difference, that the rider tries to do so with his own strength, while the ego uses borrowed forces". The ego represents what may be called reason and common sense, in contrast to the id, which contains the passions. "The ego is that part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world. It helps us to organise our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us. Ĭonscious awareness resides in the ego, although not all of the operations of the ego are conscious. It seeks to turn the id’s drive to behaviour which brings benefits in the long term rather than grief. The ego is governed by the 'reality principle', or a practical approach to the world. The ego is the sense of self and the surface of the personality, the part you usually show the world. It is filled with energy reaching it from the instincts, but it has no organisation, produces no collective will, but only a striving to bring about the satisfaction of the instinctual needs subject to the observance of the pleasure principle". "It is the dark, inaccessible part of our personality. By adding thanatos, he could describe more mental phenomena. Obviously, the rest of the personality would have somehow to deal with these two instincts. Thanatos accounts for the instinctual violent urges of humankind. ![]() ![]() So, he proposed thanatos, the death instinct. After the tragedy of World War I, however, Freud felt it necessary to add another instinct to the id. The id represents a constant in the personality as it is always present. They do not correspond one-to-one with actual structures of the kind dealt with by neuroscience. Together they make up the personality.Īccording to this model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends the ego is the organized realistic part and the super-ego plays the critical and moralising role. Many times you will want save certain pieces of information to use elsewhere in your prototype, be it to replay information someone has typed or to make logic decisions displaying differing scenarios and variables are your way of doing those things. ProtoPie, whilst doesn’t expect you to code does require you to understand certain code concepts and variables in the first and most important one. Remember when I said earlier that you are required to use some coding? Well, this is the first function that goes anywhere near the code paradigm. It’s important to state that it’s these features existing in one tool together with the ease of use of the tool that make ProtoPie so powerful so here we go. To set the stage as to why you should consider ProtoPie, I want to draw your attention to what I consider some key features that sets ProtoPie apart from other tools on the market. If that’s something that interests you then read on. So, in a nutshell, ProtoPie enables you to build a realistic prototype of your native app that will be indistinguishable from the real thing without you learning and writing any code. The only tool that comes close to what ProtoPie can do on the market today is FramerX and that tool requires you to get your hands dirty with code pretty quickly if you want to build anything meaningful. ![]() It’s amazing with the capabilities that ProtoPie provides that you don’t need to write any code (or hardly any but we’ll come to that later). One of the things that ProtoPie considers that sets it apart from many of its competitors is its ability to control the sensors in the modern-day device such as your device’s accelerometer but it’s selling point is much more far reaching than that. ProtoPie is an interaction design tool that enables the construction of some very realistic prototypes. I have used most of the prototyping tools out there at one point or another but currently, I’m hanging my hat with ProtoPie. It doesn’t require me to buy into a single companies ecosystem (unless the designer worked for a company that already has). It’s easy to integrate into existing workflows. It can do the basics but also advanced interactions. So here are the criteria I consider when thinking about recommending and training designers in any tool: Designers need to be able to get up and running as quickly as possible. ![]() We all want one tool that we can use that can do everything we need and we want that tool to have a fairly low learning curve. There are of course many different needs and levels of skill among the design community and this has a bearing. The process of vetting the right tool to use for a whole team is rigorous and lengthy. Time is precious and also companies are not in the habit of paying out for every design tool that comes along. Speaking to designers there is a fair amount of confusion as to the best tool to learn. For the last few years, I’ve spent a lot of my time training designers in prototyping at the various places I have worked. A simple search on prototypr reveals 32 results. Over the last few years, there has been a huge surge of prototyping and interaction design tools. ![]() |
