This has been one of the best trips of my life. We each carried a gallon rotopax of water and always used it. The F800GS has a 4-gallon tank standard.ġ2. We each carried a gallon rotopax of gas and never had to use it. I manually added a track section between Ukiah and Walla Walla because my gps was not cooperating.ġ1. Make sure you stop, say hi to the locals, and spend some money here (and elsewhere along the entire route).ĩ. Sumpter and Granite are really cool towns. In Seneca, we rode to John Day to check it out and got back on the route the next day.Ĩ. Unless youve got some ear plugs or sleep well in these noisy circumstances, keep going and try to make it to Delintment Lake.ħ. Camping near Riley store was the worst night I had. Make sure you keep an eye out for these!!Ħ. This was a fun road! If I remember right, there were a few barbed wire fences in this area we had to open/close and ride through. Instead, we rode east on Christmas Valley Hwy, turned north on Hwy 395, then turned north on Gap Ranch - Wagontire Rd. We decided to skip this part because we met three riders in Christmas Valley and one had a bad crash, cracked the oil sump, game over. After Fort Rock, we rode back to Christmas Valley instead of following the track through the desert. If you haven't been, it's worth it! Not shown in the gpx file but it is relatively simple to navigate there.ĥ. From Christmas Valley, we took a detour and went to Fort Rock to check it out. From here, the section that led us to Christmas Valley was a bit rocky but I encourage everyone to give it a go instead of bypassing it, it as fun.Ĥ. Just west of Paisley, we ran into a lot of fallen trees that led us to turn around and get on bigger roads that led us to the Summer Lake view points and eventually to Hwy 31 just southeast of Silver Lake. I suggest that you call these locations and verify their hours and so on.ģ. In Paisley, we ended up going to Bleachers for gas because the Chewaucan Garage hadnt opened yet (it was too early in the day). Fuel was available at the locations shown in my next post. I don't have a gpx file for the non-technical or standard option.Ģ. The file you'll get from me takes you through that technical section. We were riding three F800GS's fully loaded and we had to work a lot. We didn't realize it was an optional route until the end of that day when we were looking at the OOHVA paper maps. To be more precise, from somewhere along the California border to Crane Mountain lookout. We inadvertently rode a technical option between Lakeview and Paisley. We started with a friends gpx file (which I cleaned up a bit) and had the OOHVA paper maps for Route 5.ġ. We rode this in September of 2013 South to North. I am attaching the as ridden gpx file for Route 5. Im posting up here instead of emailing individually in hopes that I am answering all of your questions in one post and help other inmates in the process. I received multiple pms asking for the Route 5 gpx file but also asking for additional information. More than that and you are doing long days and missing sights. Also Route 4 seems like a good 3-4 day ride, and route 5, probably 5-7 IMHO. But there was enough sand that a partner would have been better if you know what I mean. That being said it was a lot of fun, and parts of it took me to places I wouldn't normally ride. My vacation days are worth more than that. Especially if you want to spend more time riding and less time, digging out your road atlases and trying to find work arounds, and backtracking - unless you like that type of thing. If I were to do it again I'd definitely purchase the official UPDATED maps and gps routes. I didn't plan it out very well and was just meandering and jumping on and off Route 4 at my whim (and small portion of Route 5). Some of them are based on the early route that ended up on close to motorized vehicle trails, some mountain bike trails and some just not cleared any longer (Chainsaw needed). I recently tried following some of those for Route 4 and Route 5 and had all kinds of issues. Keep searching on here and you will find some, but here's some advice.
